Non-Destructive Testing Inspection Services FAQs
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique used to evaluate a range of plant and machinery for potential defects, all without causing damage to the equipment in question. It is also known as non-destructive examination (NDE), non-destructive inspection (NDI), and non-destructive evaluation (NDE).
This can be as simple as a visual test by a trained NDT inspector, or a more complex type of remote inspection.
At Allianz, we are fully qualified and trained to perform a wide variety of non-destructive testing methods:
Visual inspections
The most basic form of NDT testing assesses the quality of all equipment with the naked eye. It is often the most important part of our engineer surveyors’ examination routine.
Remote visual inspections
For equipment with restrictions on entry, such as storage tanks for nuclear waste and industrial steam boilers, we can use specialist cameras, drones, crawlers and more to safely inspect the condition of your equipment.
Ultrasonic testing
Using high-frequency sound waves, ultrasonic inspections detect subsurface defects on your equipment, such as measuring the thickness of materials or fatigue cracks within the materials.
Magnetic particle testing
This uses magnetic fields to find faults in ferromagnetic materials that are not visible to the naked eye, often employed in welding, wrought products or other materials.
Dye/liquid penetrant testing
We apply either dye or liquids to identify minuscule cracks and breaks in your equipment.
Eddy current testing
Using an alternating current coil to create an electromagnetic field, this identifies surface and sub-surface defects in welding, condenser tubes, coating applications and more.
Thermal imaging/infrared thermal imaging
We use thermal imaging and infrared cameras to detect problems in electrical installations, such as suspicious temperature losses, signs of overloading, and evidence of sufficient operations.
NDT is essential in industries where component failures can cause substantial harm or significant financial loss. Examples of systems that require this level of testing include:
