Electric goods vehicles need an MOT certificate now
05 September 2018
A new law came into force on 1 September 2018. It has far-reaching consequences for anyone driving an electric goods vehicle.
Electric vans won’t be exempt from an MOT test anymore if they:
- have a gross weight that is less than 3,500kg; and
- were first registered on or after 1 March 2015.
These vehicles will need their first MOT on the third anniversary of when they were registered, like other new vehicles.
If your vehicle isn’t exempt anymore and the third anniversary has already passed, it will need a current MOT to be legally driven and taxed from that day.
As a result, MOT test centres might start getting customers presenting this type of vehicle for test. You should carry out the MOT test on these vehicles as normal.
